Now in its 7th year, the event has so far raised over £80,000 for its nominated charities since 2010.
Pedal in Preston Park (Pedal) was created by the family of Rachel Evans-Milne following her death in 2009, aged 44, from Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The first Pedal took place in the autumn of 2010 hosted by Preston Park Youth Cycle Club (PPYCC) and supported by VC Jubilee. Since then it has established itself as a great addition to the local fundraising event calendar.
Now in its sixth year, Pedal has raised over £80,000 for the MNDA and its nominated charities (in 2011, Rockinghorse, the Brighton based charity that works helping sick children in Sussex and Surrey received nearly £4,000 in raised funds from Pedal). Since 2012 Pedal has been a dedicated fundraiser for the Martlets Hospice and the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
MND is a terminal condition with an average life expectancy of 3 to 5 years. Now as in 2009 there are no known treatments and still little is know about the causes.
Watching Rachel succumb to Motor Neurone Disease was a terrible experience for all her family and friends. We wanted to do something positive and having watched Johnny Budden free run from Land's End to Paris in the spring of 2010 in support of the MNDA the idea of Pedal in Preston Park was born. The first Pedal took place in October 2010, and to see several hundred riders come and take part was an amazing experience. In 2012 we welcomed The Martlets Hospice as a partner. The Hospice and their At Home team had given Rachel her primary support and care as her condition progressed. As a family we were able to see first hand the work that the Martlets do and for Pedal to support the Hospice seemed very natural.
